This 0→1 concept explores NFC-based "Tap to Add" and "Tap to Pay" flows letting users tap a physical card to the phone to provision it into the wallet in seconds, or complete a purchase at checkout without typing a single character. The concept addresses a three-sided problem: low wallet depth, mobile checkout abandonment, and trust gaps around verification and opens a strategic path toward unbranded checkout (SoftPOS) for SMB merchants.
The Problem

New users arriving from merchant checkout don't want to pause and "set up payments later"; they want to finish buying now. Based on these observations, defined a set of design hypotheses to explore, including whether NFC-based card addition could reduce effort, whether OTP or biometric verification could improve trust, and how contextual guidance could make the experience feel intuitive without overwhelming users.

Designed the end-to-end experience from checkout entry to successful payment. Structured a flexible user flow supporting multiple entry points, including checkout, wallet onboarding, and direct payment, while maintaining a consistent verification experience. Applied progressive disclosure to minimize cognitive load and incorporated clear recovery paths to ensure users could easily continue if verification or card reading was interrupted.
Concept Exploration & Prototype
Created a paper prototype illustrating the end-to-end experience, including tap-to-add entry, NFC guidance, verification flow, success state, and return to checkout. Conducted informal concept walkthroughs with representative users to gather early feedback. Key insights revealed that users overlooked the "Hold for 2 seconds" instruction, leading to the introduction of haptic confirmation, while concerns about unintended charges inspired a clear "No charge" reassurance during the verification step.

The Solution
The final concept delivers two complementary flows unified by a single NFC tap gesture.
Tap to Add: user encounters 'Add payment method' during checkout, taps their physical card, an instruction overlay guides the tap, NFC reads the card details, OTP or biometric confirms identity, card is added and checkout resumes, all without a single form field.
Tap to Pay: on the merchant payment page, the user taps the physical card directly to complete the purchase, no wallet setup required. Both flows include first-class fallbacks (camera scan, manual entry, NFC not supported) so no user is stranded. Confidence-building microcopy explains every step, and the checkout context is preserved throughout.

On the merchant payment page, user taps physical card to phone to complete the purchase entirely, no wallet onboarding, no form entry, no redirect. Opens a strategic SoftPOS path for SMB merchants who want an unbranded, hardware-free checkout acceptance motion.
OTP / Biometric Verification Model
Replaces $1 authorization dependency with bank-issued OTP or device biometric (Face ID / fingerprint). Explicit 'No charge to your card' reassurance displayed inline. Users select their preferred method; biometric defaults if available. Measurably reduces issuer decline rate and user anxiety.
Progressive Disclosure + Confidence Copy
Each screen shows only the one action needed. Expandable 'Why do we need this?' explainer reduces anxiety without cluttering the default view. Security badge and data-capture disclosure ('We read card number and expiry only, CVV and PIN are never transmitted') build trust at the moment it matters most.
Checkout Context Preservation
After card add, users route directly back to the same merchant checkout step, not to a wallet home screen. Cart, selected items, and delivery details are preserved. 'Setup detours' that kill purchase intent are eliminated by design.

Tap to Add / Tap to Pay (NFC Concept July, 2022)
This is an independently developed product concept that explores how NFC technology could simplify online card payments and wallet enrollment. It demonstrates product thinking, UX strategy, interaction design, and concept validation rather than a production implementation.
Overview
PayPal customers and merchants experience high friction when adding funding instruments and completing mobile checkout. This 0→1 concept explores NFC-based "Tap to Add" and "Tap to Pay" flows letting users tap a physical card to the phone to provision it into the wallet in seconds, or complete a purchase at checkout without typing a single character. The concept addresses a three-sided problem: low wallet depth, mobile checkout abandonment, and trust gaps around verification and opens a strategic path toward unbranded checkout (SoftPOS) for SMB merchants.
The Problem
Adding cards to a mobile wallet often requires ten or more manual inputs PAN, expiry, CVV, billing ZIP on a small touchscreen. New users arriving from merchant checkout don't want to pause and "set up payments later"; they want to finish buying now. When issuers decline the standard $1 authorization used for verification, users hit a dead end and must contact support. The result: low wallet depth (most users keep only one funding instrument), high checkout abandonment on mobile web, and rising support costs. Trust compounds the problem, many users are reluctant to share bank credentials with third-party flows, even when the process is legitimate.
Cross-Functional Discovery & Insight Synthesis
Before exploring solutions, I collaborated with cross-functional teams to understand the existing customer experience and recurring operational challenges. Through ongoing conversations with colleagues from Product, Support, Risk, Partnerships, and Engineering, I gathered insights into common issues customers faced during card addition and checkout.
These discussions surfaced recurring themes such as verification failures, checkout friction, uncertainty during authentication, and card provisioning challenges. I consolidated these perspectives to identify patterns across the end-to-end journey and build a shared understanding of the problem space.
While this was not a formal research initiative, the collective knowledge from teams working closely with customers and payment operations provided valuable context that helped shape the product concept, prioritize user pain points, and inform the interaction design decisions.

Speed beats features at checkout: users prefer 'finish purchase now' over 'set up payments perfectly'. Any detour breaks intent
Trust is fragile: if verification looks unfamiliar (e.g., a $1 authorization charge) users assume fraud and abandon immediately
Typing on mobile creates errors and frustration: billing address and card details are the two highest drop-off form fields
Users want one reassurance sentence: a single clear explanation of 'why we need this' measurably reduces anxiety and increases completion
NFC tap feels physical and transparent: users described tapping as 'obvious' and 'safe' because the card never leaves their hand
Fallback paths are non-negotiable: 20–30% of devices or cards may not support NFC—designing only the happy path would exclude a significant segment

Ideation & Approach
I prioritized concept directions based on one key criterion: minimum typing, maximum purchase intent preservation. Three directions competed in early ideation. I selected the one that solved both problems simultaneously. Adding the card and completing checkout in a single interrupted flow.

Design Process
Discovery & Opportunity
Explored the end-to-end card addition and checkout journey by synthesizing insights gathered through cross-functional conversations and publicly available industry patterns. Identified recurring friction around manual card entry, verification uncertainty, and user trust during payment setup. Based on these observations, defined a set of design hypotheses to explore, including whether NFC-based card addition could reduce effort, whether OTP or biometric verification could improve trust, and how contextual guidance could make the experience feel intuitive without overwhelming users.
Information Architecture & User Flow
Designed the end-to-end experience from checkout entry to successful payment. Structured a flexible user flow supporting multiple entry points, including checkout, wallet onboarding, and direct payment, while maintaining a consistent verification experience. Applied progressive disclosure to minimize cognitive load and incorporated clear recovery paths to ensure users could easily continue if verification or card reading was interrupted.
Concept Exploration & Prototype
Created a paper prototype illustrating the end-to-end experience, including tap-to-add entry, NFC guidance, verification flow, success state, and return to checkout. Conducted informal concept walkthroughs with representative users to gather early feedback. Key insights revealed that users overlooked the "Hold for 2 seconds" instruction, leading to the introduction of haptic confirmation, while concerns about unintended charges inspired a clear "No charge" reassurance during the verification step.
Concept Definition & Product Vision
Consolidated the design rationale into a concept proposal illustrating the customer journey, interaction model, expected user benefits, and potential business impact. Documented key assumptions, implementation considerations, and ecosystem dependencies, including payment network, issuer, and device capabilities, to demonstrate how the concept could evolve from an exploratory idea into a pilot-ready product initiative.
The Solution
The final concept delivers two complementary flows unified by a single NFC tap gesture.
Tap to Add: user encounters 'Add payment method' during checkout, taps their physical card, an instruction overlay guides the tap, NFC reads the card details, OTP or biometric confirms identity, card is added and checkout resumes, all without a single form field.
Tap to Pay: on the merchant payment page, the user taps the physical card directly to complete the purchase, no wallet setup required. Both flows include first-class fallbacks (camera scan, manual entry, NFC not supported) so no user is stranded. Confidence-building microcopy explains every step, and the checkout context is preserved throughout.
Tap to Add (NFC Provisioning)
NFC reads card details (PAN, expiry, name) from the physical card in under two seconds. Zero manual form entry. Short animated overlay shows exactly where to hold the card. Haptic feedback confirms a successful read. Works from checkout context or wallet home, whichever path the user is on.
Tap to Pay (Unbranded DCC / SoftPOS)
On the merchant payment page, user taps physical card to phone to complete the purchase entirely, no wallet onboarding, no form entry, no redirect. Opens a strategic SoftPOS path for SMB merchants who want an unbranded, hardware-free checkout acceptance motion.
OTP / Biometric Verification Model
Replaces $1 authorization dependency with bank-issued OTP or device biometric (Face ID / fingerprint). Explicit 'No charge to your card' reassurance displayed inline. Users select their preferred method; biometric defaults if available. Measurably reduces issuer decline rate and user anxiety.
Progressive Disclosure + Confidence Copy
Each screen shows only the one action needed. Expandable 'Why do we need this?' explainer reduces anxiety without cluttering the default view. Security badge and data-capture disclosure ('We read card number and expiry only, CVV and PIN are never transmitted') build trust at the moment it matters most.
Checkout Context Preservation
After card add, users route directly back to the same merchant checkout step, not to a wallet home screen. Cart, selected items, and delivery details are preserved. 'Setup detours' that kill purchase intent are eliminated by design.
First-Class Fallback Paths
Camera scan for cards without NFC support. Manual entry with smart-formatted fields and auto-advance. 'My phone doesn't support NFC' path with clear troubleshooting. Fallbacks are designed as peer options, not error screens. So users feel capable, not stuck.
NFC Instruction Clarity
Short looping animation shows exactly where to hold the card on the specific device model. Two-second countdown with haptic confirmation prevents the most common drop-off ('I didn't know how long to hold it'). First-time educational overlay shown once, then dismissed for returning users.
